Meet Joni Williamson: Partner and Head of Brand

Back to Blog

With nearly two decades of experience at Whitehouse, Joni Williamson moved through the production ranks, long served as the Los Angeles EP, and from there moved to a new role as the company’s first Head of Brand. A true people person, Joni is known for her talent for connecting people. She will continue to focus her energy on supporting editor and director relationships, working with the Whitehouse Post sales teams, recruiting new editorial talent, and strategizing the best opportunities for Whitehouse’s roster of superstar editors.

When did you decide to work in post & why? What was your path to this point?

I decided to work in post when I had no idea that Post Production even existed. Sue Dawson scooped me up from a restaurant when I was 23, and the rest is history!

What’s your favorite thing about post and why?

Scripts are approved. Dailies are in the can. What could possibly go wrong? My favorite thing about post production is watching all of these creative people around me problem solve.

Biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Becoming a mom while managing an office was the biggest challenge I faced. When you have an incredible amount of love for your job and then you throw kids in the mix, it becomes a total balancing act. I’ve somehow managed to keep both thanks to the forgiving nature of my kids and everyone I work with.

Advice for anyone entering post?

Surround yourself with people you trust. Sue Dawson was someone that I looked up to and leaned on a lot. Joanna Manning has been my ride or die production little sister for almost my whole career. Big thanks to both of them for their support throughout the years.

Best advice you’ve received?

I don’t know IS an answer.

Is there something you wish you knew when you were starting out?

It took me quite a few years to realize that we all play a very special role in this business….And frankly, none of us could do our jobs without the other people around us. The first time that I ran a screening at Wieden + Kennedy, I was shaking with nerves. Tracy Reid looked me in the eyes and reminded me just how important it was that we were there. They needed me there to show them our amazing work just as badly as I wanted to work on their amazing work.

Can you tell us about a few projects you are proud of producing and why?

I could produce Pedigree for Rick Lawley anytime. He’s a mentor of mine and Chiat Day were our sisters and brothers then…T-Mobile for David Brixton was always a blast. Producing a Super Bowl spot here and there was always fun, but when you have clients that you adore and they keep coming back – those are the moments you really cherish in post.

How do you take your coffee?

In my 20s – with a cigarette.

Who is someone that inspires you and why?

My father-in-law is a Steel business owner in Ohio. He’s fair and he’s direct. He’s kind but stern. He’s funny and tough…(but more funny). He’s been a great example for me as a manager and has advised me throughout my entire career. Steel and Post Production have nothing to do with each another but being a solid leader is universal. He taught me how to do that.

This is a question that we ask in most entry level interviews. There is one clear wrong answer and if he or she says that answer it’s a VERY red flag.
